SEPTA will expand fare collection and validation fares at turnstiles in Center City Regional Rail stations starting in September. This change comes in preparation for further expansion of the SEPTA Key.
Turnstiles and ADA gates at the five Center City Regional Rail stations – Temple, Jefferson, Suburban, 30th Street and University City – are now fully operational. Starting Tuesday, Sept. 4 and continuing on weekdays Monday-Friday, fare collection and fare validation will take place at turnstiles in these stations from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Evenings after 8 p.m., on weekends and holidays, customers will pay their fares to the train conductors.
The change is part of an overall effort to help riders transition to paying their fares at turnstiles as the SEPTA Key rolls out on Regional Rail. Currently, Zone 4 customers can purchase Monthly TrailPasses on Key Cards, and that will expand in September to include Zone 4 Weekly TrailPasses.
The following changes will take effect on Sept. 4:
- Fare collection and validation will take place at the turnstiles and ADA gates at Temple, Jefferson, Suburban, 30th St., and University City on weekdays 6 a.m.-8 p.m.
- On Weekdays after 8:00 p.m. and all day on Saturdays, Sundays, and SEPTA Holidays, customers will pay their fare to the Conductor on the train.
- Customers with legacy magnetic stripe TrailPasses passes will swipe in at the turnstiles.
- Zone 4 Early Adopters will tap their Key Card at the turnstile validator to access the platform and trains.
- Fare Collection Ambassadors will punch tickets at the fareline.
- Cash will not be accepted at the fareline. Customers must first purchase a ticket at the Station Sales Office.
- Senior Citizens age 65 and older:
- For travel within Pennsylvania: Tap the Senior Key Photo ID Card or swipe a PA Driver’s License or Non-Driver ID with a magnetic stripe at the turnstile validator and go through the fare line ($1 fare for travel to/from Pennsylvania stations eliminated effective Sept. 1)
- For travel to stations in New Jersey and Delaware: Purchase a half-fare ticket from the Sales Office, then tap Senior SEPTA Key Card or swipe the Driver’s License or Non-Driver ID with a magnetic stripe at the turnstile validator. Present your Key Card or Driver’s License or Non-Driver ID and ticket to the Fare Collection Ambassador.
- Please remember Pennsylvania issued paper Senior IDs are no longer valid for travel effective Sept. 1.
- Customers traveling with a Reduced Fare Key Card or PA issued paper Reduced Transit ID must purchase a ticket from the Sales Office – cash is not accepted at the fareline during the above days and times.
SEPTA would also like to remind customers that train conductors will continue to conduct on-board checks for fares and fare instruments.
