Track Renewal Project Scheduled Along SEPTA’s Route 13 Trolley

Track Renewal Project Scheduled Along SEPTA’s Route 13 Trolley

Work on Chester Avenue Begins June 8, 2018

SEPTA will conduct a track renewal project on a portion of its Route 13 trolley line from June 8 – June 15, 2018. The project will take place on Chester Avenue between 65th and 66th Streets, on the eastbound and westbound tracks.

SEPTA crews will replace tracks in the west end “S” curve section of the Route 13 [the east end “S” curve tracks were replaced in 2017]. The tracks in this area were installed in the 1980s. The street structure supporting the tracks has deteriorated due to weather, traffic and the age of the road surface. SEPTA will excavate and replace track and repave the track area. The new track will result in reduced sound and vibration because the new rail is encased in an insulated rubber boot. The new and improved track components will make for a smoother ride and allow SEPTA to provide safe and reliable trolley service.

Buses will replace trolleys along the Route 13 from Darby Transportation Center (9th and Main Streets) to the 40th Street Trolley Portal for the duration of the project, beginning June 8, 2018. Passengers can board any Route 11, 34, or 36 trolley for service between the 40th Street Portal and Center City.

The project will start at 65th Street and progress west. Through lanes on Chester Avenue will be closed to all traffic, with the exception of emergency vehicles. Delivery and trash removal vehicles will have limited access. All side streets in the construction areas will be closed to thru traffic, but local traffic will be permitted up to construction site. Parking will not be permitted in the area or adjacent to the tracks being reconstructed, however, exceptions will be made for those with special needs. Walking access for businesses will be arranged.

Construction will begin at 8 pm. On Friday, June 8. Both parking lanes at 65th Street and Chester Avenue will be closed for the duration of the project so rail strings can be welded and stored until installation.
