SEPTA Will Stop Issuing Paper Transfers As Transition to SEPTA Key Continues

Transfers Available Only on SEPTA Key Card Starting Aug. 1 SEPTA Will Stop Issuing Paper Transfers As Transition to SEPTA Key Continues

As more Transit customers switch to the SEPTA Key, paper transfers for travel on buses, subways and trolleys will stop being issued at the end of the service day on Tuesday, July 31. Starting Aug. 1, to receive a qualifying $1 transfer, customers will need to use a SEPTA Key Card with Travel Wallet. Similarly, customers who are eligible for reduced fare travel will need to use a SEPTA Key Card with Travel Wallet to receive the half-fare $.50 transfer.

Most SEPTA Transit customers have already made the switch to the SEPTA Key Card, which was launched in June 2016. Since that time, SEPTA has taken a deliberate, gradual approach to phasing out its outdated legacy fare instruments, while educating customers about the benefits of switching to the Key.

The elimination of paper transfers follows the end of token and magnetic stripe TransPass sales at SEPTA-operated locations earlier this spring. Third-party retail sales of tokens and magnetic stripe passes will also end by Aug. 1 (https://www.septa.org/media/releases/2018/5-15-18.html).

Customers who are still using tokens and legacy TransPasses are urged to make the switch to the SEPTA Key. It provides the same fare payment methods and discounts, but with added convenience and benefits including:

  • One Card that can be loaded and reloaded with the SEPTA Transit fare of your choice:
    • Weekly/Monthly TransPass, One Day Convenience Pass
    • Put money in the Card Travel Wallet and ride as you do today using tokens and transfers
  • Protection against loss or theft when you register your Key Card
  • Options to purchase fares at SEPTA sales offices, transit station/bus loop Fare Kiosks, online at www.septakey.org, Customer Call Center at 855-567-3782 and at over 300 locations that are part of the SEPTA Key External Retail Network.
